The Friday Night Lights of Horror

Friday Night Lights of Horror

This week’s Chiller TV premiere (Premieres Friday, December 28 at 9P ET - with plenty of repeats, which can be found here) is Larry Fessenden’s excellent 2006 thriller The Last Winter. We here at Chiller have a special place in our twisted, little hearts for cold, snowy horror flicks and Fessenden sure knows how to make them. Featuring former Friday Night Lights stars Zach Gilford and Connie Britton, we thought this would be the perfect chance to run down some of the other FNL alumni’s work in the horror genre. Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose (unless, of course, you're dealing with Freddy Krueger or Ghostface).

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010) – Connie Britton

We could have easily included Connie Britton (who played Tami Taylor on FNL) work on FX’s American Horror Story here, but we’re sticking to movies, so instead we mention her turn as Nancy’s mother, Dr. Gwendoline Holbrook, in the 2010 remade of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The film may not have lived up to expectations, but any excuse for us to see Britton on the big screen is enough to get our butts in the seats.

SCREAM 4 (2011) – Aimee Teegarden

Aimee Teegarden grew up right before our eyes during her stint as Julie Taylor on FNL, but she’s definitely all grown up as one of Ghostface’s latest victims, Jenny Randall, in Wes Craven’s 2011 return to the Scream franchise. We may not get to see her for too long, but it’s enough to get our Julie Taylor fix for a bit.

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2003) – Brad Leland

Everyone’s favorite love-to-hate-him character on Friday Night Lights was the gregarious (and often obnoxious) Buddy Garrity, played to perfection by Brad Leland. The character actor’s horror film resume may be small, but his tiny, memorable part as Big Rig Rob in the 2003 reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a fun one.

THE ROOMMATE (2011) – Minka Kelly

The gorgeous Minka Kelly’s turn as Buddy Garrity’s daughter Lyla on FNL made her into a household name, but she’s since gone on to become a big star with plenty of TV and movie roles. It was, however, partly her similarity in appearance to Leighton Meester that landed her a starring role in The Roommate. The film itself isn't that memorable, but Kelly brings the fun when she can.

PROM NIGHT (2008) – Scott Porter

Friday Night Lights alum Scott Porter (who played the paralyzed Jason Street) also left the fictional town of Dillon, Texas for a role in a horror film. Porter played Bobby in the 2008 remake Prom Night and, well, let’s just say that it’s another horror film that you should probably skip over and head right to the original.
